Gitan is a historic Italian brand of Lightweight motorcycles.two-strokes built in Italy in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. In 1951 Gitane built motorcycles and light motorcross bikes with two-and four-stroke engines of 49 - to 198 cc. From 1957 to 1960 production was mainly aimed at mopeds, although light motorcycles were still being made. In 1961, there was a 50 cc scooter.
In the 60s there was little done to further development of the existing models, even though they were continued to be produce. Only until the 70s were new Gitane models launched which were mainly mopeds. In the Netherlands, the Gitane-mopeds went under the name Tansini, because the name was too similar with others. Tansini was probably also the sponsor of the team Jamathi-motorcycle racing season. In the beginning Jamathi engines were initially used in "Tansini".
Models included the Libeccio 125 (1957), Carnaby 50 (1976) and Cross 50 (1973).
