The Bandini 750 sports torpedo is a racing car model, produced from 1950 to 1956 by the italian company Bandini Cars.

Born in 1950, this new type marks the consecration of Bandini as car international level. These are the 750 sports torpedo fact, to take [in [Forlì]] the title of Champion of USA 1955 and 1957 in addition to its successes of division To those from 1961 1963 (Division South-West) and the many victories gained in different categories by the two sides of Atlantic Ocean.

It was produced for six years, although its relationship with the competition is so close as to enable the classification of models of its long evolution on the basis of standards of technical regulations. In this sense, the rule that forbade the use of parafanghini type motion (in 1953 in Italy and the 1955 in the USA) identifies as cars were adapted to it and which created ad hoc.

Until 1953, 750 sports torpedo could participate in "750 race" class, simply dismounting cycle fenders.

Tony Pompeo, a itaian-american dealer, satisfied with the previous 1100 and 1100 sport explicitly required to Ilario Bandini, from cars to run in the category up to 750 cm ³ engine capacity.

Together Order, came from the United States also an engine Crosley of 44 inch³; utililzzato until then, to be used more varied: on vessels, aircraft, even by firemen to Operate large pumps. It is lightweight and compact with basement aluminium to five media bench, monoblock and head to two valves per cylinder in a single block and distribution SOHC gear; constituted a good basis for processing Bandini. The changes more riguardarono l 'crankshaft which was replaced with one in steel, pistons the camshafts, the pump of oil and race that was brought to 59 mm, to have a engine capacity ≈ total of 747 cm³.

With this preparation the first 750 sports torpedo is launched to disputare dozens of races: uphill, on circuits citizens or derived within military airbases but also races most famous and challenging (often six or twelve hours) as the 12 hours of Sebring and the most famous Italian race to the world "MIlle Miglia". Round of "World Championship Sports".

The 750 sports torpedo, is very competitive and versatile, suitable to compete in higher categories.

A front precise and stable, big traction and drive, CG aerodynamic efficiency are the key words of the successes but especially the great power to weight ratio that put out the qualities of the pilot. It is no coincidence Jim Pauley (who also runs the 24 hours of Le Mans), Dave Michaels and Tom O'Brien colsero the best results in years when Bandini (motorized Siata, Offenhauser and AlfaRomeo) competevano FM in the category with Ferrari , Maserati and Porsche. Just think that D. Michaels with a motorized Bandini Offenhauser of 1625 cc engine capacity held for a year and half of the track record of Thompson in class up to 2000 cc

Speed and quality that have shown, in the category up to 750 cm³ Dolph Vilardi (U.S. Champion 1955), Melvin Sachs (U.S. Champion 1957), Henry Rudkin (vicecampione U.S. in 1956), George Tipsword, just to mention a few architects of the successes U.S., but also the Italians Massimo Bondi (A thousand miles to the ninth, 1953) and the same manufacturer Ilario Bandini that (at the age of 44 years) was the first absolute uphill races (1955 and Predappio 1956), first-class racing in the Raticosa, Consuma and Reggio Emilia but also fourth in the Italian league standings Italian speed. With success came the covers of newspapers, exhibitions exhibitions in Chicago and Madison Square Garden in New York. In 1957 the award-winning author and scenggiatore William F. Nolan environmental his story on board a 750 sports Bandini torpedo.

From 1953, 750 sports torpedo can also count on an engine radically revised and improved. It was designed a new tested aluminium with two camshafts in the head with distribution gear. Changed also the position of spinterogeno, which was placed on the head. The block cast iron pipes contained the cylinder dismantled. They were also studied new rods, pump oil increased, a radiator of barrel-shaped calettata and a cup of increased capacity and different shapes to allow a further lowering the centre of gravity of the car. The potency of the first engine Bandini (Crosley was left only the basement) came up to 71 HP 8500 rpm, sufficient to push the 750 sports until the maximum speed of 175 km / h and medium-lap exceeding 130 km / h. While cars equipped with engines 1500 cm³ reached the 218 km/h maximum speed.

After thirteen years after its appearance, this type still won titles in his division thanks to a new engine, full Bandini, brought to 850 cm³ which ensures a further increase in power to Hugh Grammar to reach the maximum speed of 185 km/h at 9000 rpm.

The body

From 1950 to 1953

The first two-seater body in aluminium were made by the Rocco Motto's company. There are boats with a line aimed at maximum penetration aerodynamics, a "functional simplicity" that characterizes many Bandini. The front is almost entirely made up of a grid-shaped elliptical that provides the air needed for cooling the engine. From the start bombature two sides (on which they are housed headlights hiding) absorbing the front suspensions avoid disrupt vein fluid from this area. They shrink considerably, creating a "Coke effect" but aimed to increase the race steering. The body vehicle, from very simple, does not increase greatly the section while regulation include a stop for the passenger who is of very small. The tail takes the form dell'ellissoide crushed, the two lines of bombature and has only one central light. There are more sfoghi for hot air shaped gills of sharks from the engine compartment. Later, to meet the requests came from United States, even body types were made to Bandini. The lights were positioned behind the front grid, avoiding the laborious lights little doors characterising the first cars Motto.

From 1953 to 1956

The technical regulation imposed a restyling to 750 sports torpedo. It was not carried out a body including wheels but were created wheel that could be attached to the body while maintaining the standard of performance and lightness that were requested.

It was amended to make uniform the line; whole body became more smooth and round and away considerably from the model of departure but adding aesthetic pleasantness aerodynamic performance.

A recent contest of elegance in USA

This type is characterized also for the curious position of the headlights, mounted between the wheels and the car body, resting position not oppose any resistance but aerodynamic meet with the mere presence requirements of the regulation. Flourish on 750 sports torpedo in 1953 also new elements for Bandini: rollbar-headrest-tailed long, perfectly organic line overall, a rigid element that covers the appropriate seat passenger, and new openings on the bonnet and on the side of the carburetors to increase the air mass necessary to engines increased.

Other

An article of the'50s

The 750 sports torpedo was used often with different engines: Offenhauser (1625 cm³), Saab 750 cm³ Mercury, MG 1250 cm ³ Alfa Romeo 2000 cm³; perfectly adapted to higher categories or processing more unusual. The most striking (for us Europeans) is the Bandini version Dragster is equipped with an engine Cadillac ≈ 6000 cm³ engine capacity was able to walk 400 meters in 11.16 seconds with a speed exit of 217 km/h and a tip speed (with special reports) of 320 km/h.

Trivia

Ilario Bandini departure in 1953.

The Bandini 750 sports participated in all editions from 1953 1957 of "MIlle Miglia" (as Sebring, valid for the world championship sports) with different crews. In 1953, taken off the same manufacturer Ilario Bandini in pairs with Sintoni, withdrew its around Forlì.
