Alfa Romeo's in-house V6 engine debuted in 1979 with the Alfa 6, and became famous in the later 164. First engine introduced for markets was 2.5 L version. Alfa Romeo V6 engine is possibile to make up to 3.8 L.
2.0
2.0 L (1997cc) version was introduced in 1983. Same year came carburetor (135 hp,99 kW) and fuel injected versions. 2.0 turbo version was introduced in 1991.

The original engine displaced 2.5 L (2492cc) and produced 154 hp (115 kW). It was a 2-valve design with a single belt-driven camshaft per cylinder bank. Six carburettors were fitted.
Fuel injection was added for the 1983 Alfa 6, which produced 158 hp (116 kW).

Four-valve
A four-valve version was introduced in 1997 with Alfa Romeo 156. Engine produced now 190 hp (140 kW). Year 2001 engine was producing 192 hp (141 kW). 166 used slightly detuned versions to make more low rev torque. This engine version was awarded with International Engine of the Year award in 2000.

The engine was bored and stroked to 3.0 L (2959 cc/180 in³) for the 1987 75/Milano Verde, where it produced 183 hp (136 kW), still with 2 valves per cylinder. This engine was modified for transverse placement in the 164 and fitted with a high-performance camshaft and low-restriction exhaust, producing an even 200 hp (149 kW).

Four-valve
The engine was upgraded to dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder in 1993. Along with other refinements, this engine produced 210 hp (157 kW) and 198 ft·lbf (268 N·m) for the regular 1993 164 and 230 hp (172 kW) and 202 ft·lbf (274 N·m) in the 164 Quadrifoglio.

2002 was introduced Alfa Romeo 156 GTA with 3.2 L (3179cc) version with 250 hp (184 kW) and 300 Nm. Later this engine was also used in Alfa Romeo 166 and Alfa Romeo GT in slightly detuned form (240hp)
