The Alfa Romeo 33 is a medium sized front wheel drive saloon, manufactured by Alfa Romeo between 1983 and 1994, replacing the Alfasud. The car was an evolution of the Alfasud, based on the same floorplan and mechanicals. Lightweight and nimble, with powerful boxer engines, it was renowned for its fun handling and sometimes temperamental electrics. Launched in 1983 as a 4-door hatchback, it received a station-wagon version by Pininfarina (Giardinetta, later SportWagon) in the following year. During its 11 year lifespan the model knew two restyles: a mild one in 1987, when the 1.7 litre engine was introduced, and a deeper one in 1990, with restyled front and rear ends, also introducing the 16 valve version of the 1.7 litre engine producing 137bhp. This engine gave the 33 blistering performance, bettering or rivalling most sporty cars of the time such as the Golf GTI. The model came to an end in 1994, being replaced by the 145 and 146, using the same boxer engines but built around an entirely new platform based on the Fiat Tipo's.
