Fiat Uno rally car

The Fiat Uno is a supermini car introduced in 1983 by Fiat and still sold in underdeveloped countries.

1983-1990

The FIat Uno was launched in 1983 to replace the ageing Fiat 127. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro's ItalDesign company, it was praised for it's good interior space and economy, thanks to it's tall, square body and a low drag coefficient of 0.34. It was voted Car of the Year in 1984, with a narrow margin over the Peugeot 205 - its key competitor - and the Volkswagen Golf. The first cars were offered with the old 0.9 ohv(45BHP), 1.1 sohc (58BHP) and 1.3 sohc (65BHP) engines with 3 or 5 doors. A 1.3 diesel engine with 45BHP was also available.

From 1985, the new 45BHP 1.0 SOHC FIRE (Fully Integrated Robotised Engine) was offered, which gave improved performance and economy. Also in 1985 the high-performance Uno Turbo variant was launched, with a 1.3 turbocharged engine offering 105BHP.

1990-

In 1990 the Uno was given a mild facelift, which saw revisions to the bodywork, improving the drag coefficient (0.30). The interior was also revised. At this time, the old 1.1 engine was replaced by a new FIRE version, which produced 56BHP, and a new 1.4 engine replaced the 1.3 in both naturally aspirated and Turbo versions.

The Uno was successful during it's production run until 1995, when it was replaced by the Punto. Over 6 million Unos have been produced.

Although the Uno is no longer produced in Italy, it is still manufactured in Brazil, where a sedan version called the Duna or Prêmio and a station wagon called the Duna Weekend or Elba were also produced, and in South Africa, where it is assembled by the local Nissan factory, without Fiat badges. Currently, the car is sold as the Fiat Mille, an entry-level model, and received its most recent facelift for the 2004 model year. The 2005 Brazilian version has received a Flex Fuel system, enabling the car to use ethanol or gasoline as fuel, both pure or in any proportion mixture. Production in Poland run until 2002.
