This type of engine was made up of two main pieces, usually two smaller engine sizes and usually only two engine blocks, coupled and arranged in a line to form an engine twice the size to what you would use only one of the sub-blocks used.

Biblocco engines could be used in combination with one or two a heads that were each to complete each stroke in the sub-block. Many car makers in the early twentieth century had used this method. These included the Hotchkiss, the Daimler and Benz, Opel and the Itala. Shortly after the end of the First World War this technical solution fell into disuse.
